Under Elon Musk, Twitter is “taking child exploitation seriously”

Twitter “takes child abuse seriously,” says the platform’s harshest CSE critic. Teslarati in a personal interview.

Eliza Bleu is a survivor of human trafficking and an advocate for victims, especially children. Bleu has put pressure on Twitter for years to remove CSE material from the scale, and since Elon Musk’s takeover, Twitter has been slow to remove much of the content. He said Teslarati but he is happy to see the new transformation of the sector under the leadership of Elon Musk.

He noted that under new leadership, Twitter “takes child abuse seriously.” But there is still a lot of work to be done. There is an ongoing lawsuit against the social media platform that started before Elon Musk bought it. The plaintiffs, John Doe 1 and John Doe 2, are minors who were sexually abused, and videos of the abuse were posted on Twitter. When the two, now adults, asked Twitter to remove the content, Twitter refused.

The content the publisher wants Twitter to remove has had more than 167,000 views and 2,223 retweets.

Bleu highlighted some of the key changes Twitter has made under its new leadership. The first change is the reporting system. In a tweet, Bleu made a suggestion for Twitter, and so far, the platform has implemented two of those suggestions. The first is clear and easy to report. Twitter has implemented two-click reporting for children to report their own abusive material.

Bleu noted that there needs to be a separate chart for adults who experience sexual abuse as well. “It needs to be clear for adults and children who experience sexual abuse, and the reporting options need to be separate.”

Another major issue that the platform has been working on is the removal of hashtags known to be used to sell CSE. These are known keywords that are used to market CSE in the field. In the video below, attorneys Lisa Haba and Peter Gentala, the two attorneys representing John Doe 1 and John Doe 2, explain how these marks are used.

These tags are mentioned in the lawsuit, and Teslarati we investigated them to see if the platform was actually removing the content. We’ve seen Twitter remove most of the content; however, there are still accounts submitting content requests.

The screenshot below shows that Twitter has removed content from the “Latest” tab for one of these top hashtags. The tabs for “Photos” and “Videos” are also empty. However, the “Top Tweets” section still had CSE requests and used several other tags. Unfortunately, some of these brands are still very active. Bleu noted that predators will continue to send messages using different tags, but that tags can help authorities catch criminals–which is one of the reasons why. Teslarati does not release the tag.

In his tweet process, Bleu noted that some of the brands outside the first three are actively involved in the distribution and transmission of illegal content. Bleu said Teslarati but the new sensation of Twitter makes him hopeful.

“After years of defending minorities on Twitter, I’ve never been as hopeful as I am now. I don’t expect perfection in any field. The only thing I have ever wished for was to see a sense of urgency about such an important matter. In most of these cases it is a matter of life or death for each victim, so every second counts.

Bleu’s recommendation for Twitter is to continue prioritizing the removal of CSE content, reporting, reviewing all reports, and working with the Centers- national for missing and exploited children. He added that Twitter should update this issue using all available technologies.

“There’s a lot of free technology available in the field and it’s been very successful,” Bleu added. His final request for Twitter and Elon Musk is to “deal with this problem at a level that does not violate the rights of innocent citizens in particular.
