Um…a third Princess diaries movie is coming out after a hiatus of almost 20 years, and everyone is *absolutely* freaking out right now.
The original 2001 film starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, based on the novel by Meg Cabot, tells the story of a teenager named Mia Thermopolis who lives in San Francisco with her mom. Mia discovers that she is not only a dorky nerd trying to make it through high school, but the heir to the Genovian throne. Over the course of the film, she must decide if she wants to live a royal life in the spotlight (and attend lots of fun royal events in the process). Spoiler alert – she says “yes” to the princess life.
A very young Chris Pine joined the cast for the 2004 film sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which follows Princess Mia after she graduates from Princeton University and searches for true love (she must marry within 30 days if she is to become Queen). Although the film ends with Mia convincing parliament that no, she doesn’t need a man to run the country, Mia and Lord Nicholas Devereaux (aka Chris Pine) are definitely madly in love, which which leaves the possibility of a third film quite open. .
And while people are pined (pun intended) on the possibility of a third film for years, it seems that good things come to those who wait. As of November 15, sources have confirmed that The Hollywood Reporter that a third film is coming, and it will be a brand new continuation of the series, rather than a reboot.

Who will be in the cast for The princess diaries 3?
Since it looks like the film is still in its *very** stages, the cast has not been confirmed. Anne Hathaway has no plans to return (yet!). The Hollywood Reporter She said, but as recently as last month, she said she would support a third film.
“I want more than to entertain him, I’m drawn to him,” she said Entertainment Tonight. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think it would work. We’d go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and make it happen.” I, for one, am screaming on the inside.
It is unclear whether Julie Andrews will choose to return to her role as Queen Clarisse at this time. “I think it would be too late to do it now,” she said The Hollywood Reporter on June 8. “It’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a beautiful idea, but I don’t think it would be possible.
But then, on June 9, she said Entertainment Tonight that she still does not know if she will return. “It depends on what the situation is, and if they can come up with something, that would be great, but if not, there will be other things,” she said.
What about the plot?
Again, no word on the story yet, but if I know anything about Genovia, it’s that there’s always some great drama going on, and plenty of sweet love stories to tell. And of course, it’s bound to err on the comic side like its predecessors.
when will The princess diaries 3 to release?
Since news of the third movie has only just broken, it’s too early to know, and there’s still no confirmation as to when the movie will come out. But for now, I will leave you this:
How much money do the movies make?
Princess diaries 1 free, brought in $163.5 million worldwide, and the The Princess diaries 2 of charge introduced $134.7 million, per The Hollywood Reporter. Of course, it’s still unclear how much the third will rake in, but based on the Julie Andrews/Anne Hathaway fan clubs out there, my guess is that it will be as good as the first two.
I can’t wait to see Princess Genoa grace the screen again. Three blessings to Mia!
