Teams confirmed for 2022 College Rugby Association of America’s Fall Classic in Charlotte, December 3-4 | Latest Rugby News

The Collegiate Rugby Association of America (CRAA) has confirmed that it will host the 2022 Fall Classic, which will take place December 3-4 at the Mecklenburg Sports Complex in Mathews, NC.

Led by the Women’s D1 Elite and the Women’s D1 and D2 Fall Championships, the weekend of rugby will also feature two Men’s D1A Championships. All matches will be streamed live for free on The Rugby Network.

The CRAA has partnered with The Rugby Network (TRN) to provide free online streaming of the Championship weekend and CRAA ‘Match of the Week’ in 2023. Adding to its coverage of all Rugby Leagues, TRN is delighted to expand its rugby offerings and bring the college game to the fore.

“Last year’s championship event was an incredible experience for the CRAA and the competing teams, and we are excited to build on that experience this December. Our goal is to provide student-athletes with a professional experience and provide coverage for all fans, alumni and spectators at the participating institutions,” said Paul Keeler, CRAA Chairman. “Partnering with The Rugby Network on our championships and upcoming match of the week brings the best of college rugby to alumni and fans both near and abroad.”

The women’s bracket has some of the best offerings in college rugby. Moving from spring to fall, the Women’s D1 Elite National Championship will have a 2021 champion Lindenwood University vs. University of life, the Lions will face the Running Eagles in the final game of the year for the fifth year in a row. The Women’s D1 Fall Championship will include the 2021 champion US Naval Academy vs. Utah Statewhile the women’s D2 fall championship will be won by the winners Temple against the 2021 champions Summer will face each other with the winner of the second semi-final Colorado School of Mines and US Coast Guard. The D2 semi-finals will not be broadcast on The Rugby Network, but the championship final will take place on Sunday.

“We continue to enhance the professional environment for these championship games, which creates a fantastic student-athlete and fan experience for college rugby,” said Olivia Benzan-Daniel, CRAA Women’s Rugby President. “Seeing women’s and men’s rugby compete at the highest level. The Autumn Classic Championship weekend is the highlight of the autumn rugby season.

The Mint City Bowl features the Colorado State University Rams of the D1A Rocky Mountain Conference taking on the D1A rookie University of Kentucky Wildcats. The Wildcats went undefeated in SCRC D1AA this fall 2022 season and finished their schedule with a tie against Big10 runner-up Ohio State. Following the Ohio State game, the Wildcats were invited to test against the 19th-ranked Rams in the Fall Classic.

The Hornet’s Nest Bowl features two top D1A teams in Ohio State University and Penn State University. The Buckeye’s finished #2 in the Big10 Championship (ranked #17), while the Nittany Lions played in the Rugby Eastern Conference this fall. These two teams will meet for the first time this season in the fall classic tournament.

The Mecklenburg Sports Complex is a large sports complex and park in Matthews, North Carolina and has hosted the CRAA Fall Classic in the past. Located southeast of Charlotte, the facility features 12 full-size football fields anchored by a 5,000-seat stadium.

8×8 Sports, an American rugby apparel company, is the “title partner” of the overall event and has also sponsored the CRAA Spring Championships in Houston, Texas. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for the event.
