Selena Gomez is a longtime member of Taylor Swift’s star-studded circle of friends, but Gomez says Swift is her “only friend” in the entertainment industry.
Gomez spoke with Rolling Stones’ Alex Morris about her life in the entertainment industry in an interview published Thursday. The singer’s new documentary “Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me,” which highlights her mental health journey since 2016, was also released Friday.
Gomez told Rolling Stone that as she got older, she struggled to find her voice and attract her fans. The former Disney star also shared that she doesn’t have many celebrity friends to talk about her troubles.
“I never fit in with a bunch of cool celebrity girls. My only friend in the industry is really Taylor [Swift], so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong. I feel like everyone around me is living a full life. I have this position and I’m really happy, but… eh? Do these material things make me happy? She said, adding, “I just don’t like who I am because I don’t know who I am. “
Swift and Gomez met in 2005. Gomez told KIIS FM UK in 2017 that they were both dating members of the Jonas Brothers and “just hit it off”.
Friends have complimented each other in recent weeks. Gomez shared Thursday on her new SiriusXM radio channel that Swift is “the most influential artist to me,” according to Billboard.
“Not because she’s my friend, but because she’s an artist who can transition into so many different genres, and she’s able to do that seamlessly, which I admire so much. It’s so rare,” she said Say. “I love her process, I just admire all the work she does. She definitely inspires me.”
Swift, who released her 10th studio album, “Midnight,” on October 21, also expressed her support for Gomez and her new film. In an Instagram Story posted Friday, the singer shared a trailer for “My Heart and Me” and a sweet note to the “Only Murder in the Building” actress.
“Proud of you @selenagomez,” she wrote. “love you forever.”
