Weekend rain The heaviest rain will be on Saturday, with scattered showers on Sunday. A few showers may linger on Monday. The rain in the valley started early Saturday morning and will be steady, with the heaviest rain falling before 14.00 In the Sacramento area, a period of heavy rain will begin around 10. Periods of rain are also expected for the rest of Saturday with heavier showers and dry spells. Sunday is expected to have brief rain and thunderstorms throughout the day. A combined 1 to 2 inches of rain could fall in the valley on Saturday and Sunday. The Foothills could get 2 to 3 inches. Wind in Northern California Strong winds will pick up in the Valley and lower Foothills Saturday morning. Gusts of 45 to 50 mph could be seen on the east side of the valley, which could cause power outages or downed tree limbs. Gusts are likely around 40 mph in Sacramento. The wind will die down in the late afternoon. Snowfall in the Sierra is expected to increase throughout the day Saturday and Sunday. Travel in the Sierra this weekend will be very difficult and slow.Saturday’s snow levels will be in the 5,000 foot range or higher. The heaviest snow will likely fall between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., at rates of 2-3 inches per hour. Colder air will drop snow levels into the 3,500-4,000 foot range Saturday night. Snow overnight into early Sunday. The intensity of the snow will decrease by the afternoon. Snow totals for both days could be 4 feet or more above 6,000 feet.
