Philadelphia shooting leaves 9 injured outside bar, multiple gunmen sought

Nine people were wounded, two critically, when multiple gunmen fired at least 40 shots into a crowd gathered on the sidewalk outside a Philadelphia bar Saturday night, authorities said.

The attackers fled the chaotic scene in the Kensington area of ​​the city in a vehicle and remained at large on Sunday morning.

Asked at a news conference whether the gunmen posed a threat to the community, Deputy Commissioner John Stanford noted the number of wounded and shell casings littering the street outside Jack’s Famous Bar and said: “I think it’s a threat to public safety.”

The shooting unfolded around 10:45 p.m. as there were many more people than usual in the area enjoying an unseasonably warm November night, Stanford said.

He said the group was milling about on the sidewalk outside the bar when several gunmen got out of a black vehicle sitting in the middle of East Allegheny Avenue, near Kensington Avenue, and opened fire on the crowd without warning.

“At this point, it appears that these individuals may have spotted someone they wanted to shoot at, got out of their vehicle and just started shooting,” Stanford said, adding that investigators do not yet know what the target or motive for the attack was. attack.

Stanford said the shooting occurred despite the fact that there was already a heavy police presence in the area. He said officers walking the beat heard the gunshot and rushed to help the wounded men and women as the shooters ran back to the dark vehicle and fled. He also noted that a narcotics task force was investigating a half-block away from the scene of the shooting.

“We have some unscrupulous people in this city who don’t care. They don’t care how many police officers are here, and some don’t care how many people are here,” Stanford said.

He said investigators have recovered at least 40 pieces of ballistic evidence from the scene and plan to review surveillance video from businesses in the area in hopes of identifying the attackers.

He said seven victims were in stable condition and two were critical.

The shooting comes amid a 5 percent drop in both homicides and aggravated gun crimes in Philadelphia in the first 10 months of this year compared to the same period in 2021, according to the police department’s long-running crime statistics. Philadelphia broke its annual homicide record in 2021, recording 562 homicides.
