He flew back to London in the early hours of Tuesday morning and much could be done imminently as the wingers return to undergo a medical at Tottenham in The deadline day.

Spurs are believed to be making structured payments towards the £39m fee – the defender’s release clause – with the move permanent from 1 July.

“Tottenham returned yesterday in talks with Tottenham. The understanding of the goals of the game moved late on Sunday evening with Spurs, who thought that a lot had happened over the weekend.

“Feedi and M. Edwards about the fee structure – a former Tottenham player at Sporting – to renegotiate the potential for a selling fee if he were to leave Sporting in the future.

“He flew into London around three o’clock this morning, so I hope he will be a good player in the next few hours.

“I told him I was very excited to join this football club.

“I can also confirm that Matt Doherty has joined Atletico Madrid on loan – this is a straight loan until the end of the season as I understand it, no option or obligation. Doherty is asking for LaLiga.”

Analysis: A major upgrade in a key position

Sky Sports’ Nick Wright:

Antonio Conte’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system requires the effectiveness of the wings and while Ivan Perisic has strengthened his left side, the right has been neglected. Until now

Pedro Porro is set to arrive at Spurs having emerged as Europe’s most exciting youngster with Lisbon, scoring nine goals and providing 13 assists in 67 Primeira Liga appearances by joining Girona in 2019.

He helped the Portuguese side to win the league and cup double in his first season at the club and that success allowed him to prove himself against the Champions League, including Spurs this season, and Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City last term.

He has embraced this challenge, proving his ability to excel in possession and possession, but it is that attacking threat that appeals to Conte and the Spurs.

Pedro Porro is far more productive than Emerson Royal offensively

So far this season, Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty have scored just two goals and one assist between them in a combined total of 28 Premier League appearances.

The Brazilian’s first choice in most of the campaign and a deeper insight into the numbers shows more of the inconsistency between his output and Porro’s.

He also created seven times as many chances per 90 minutes as Emerson and his numbers for assists, crosses, shots and drop-offs are considerably higher. He represents a significant upgrade for the Spurs at a crucial position.

No option to buy means the winger will return to the Spurs, where his contract runs until 2026, in the summer. The 21-year-old joined Tottenham from the LaLiga club in 2021 for a fee of £21.6 million, which also included Erik Lamela moving to Sevilla as part of the deal. However, Gil has only made 13 appearances for Spurs, having also spent time on loan at Valencia last season.

The moment comes after new winger Arnaut Danjuma made his debut in Tottenham’s 3-0 win at Preston at the weekend.

Gil is frustrated by Danjuma’s arrival. He thought he had done enough over the last few weeks to impress the coaches, performing well in the 4-0 victory at Crystal Palace earlier this month.
