Two months ago, the first trailer for the upcoming period comedy Babylon was released – and it quickly gained a lot of hype.
Set to open in select theaters Dec. 23 and elsewhere Jan. 6, the film is directed by Damien Chazelle, who also wrote and directed the critically acclaimed project la la land and to whip.
But beyond the film’s famous director and compelling trailer, Babylon Its release has fans even more excited, with Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva and Tobey Maguire just a few of the big names.
In the film, Margot plays Nellie, an aspiring actress who recruits Diego’s Manny and Brad’s Jack to help her find success and stardom in Hollywood in the ’20s.
In an interview with E! to discuss the project news, Margot revealed a behind-the-scenes look at one of the film’s most important additions.
After revealing that she and Brad kiss in the film, Margot admitted that the kiss was actually “not in the script at all” and was completely improvised by her.
“It wasn’t in the script,” she said of the kiss. “But I thought, When will I get a chance to kiss Brad Pitt? i just go for it“
So Margot took matters into her own hands to make sure she got her long-awaited kiss with Brad.
While talking to the director, Margot convinced Damien that it made perfect sense for her character, Nellie, to kiss Jack.
“I said, ‘Damien, I think Nellie is going to go up and kiss Jack,'” she recalls. “And Damien was like, ‘Well, she can—wait, wait. You just want to kiss Brad Pitt. I was like, ‘Oh, sue me then.'”
“‘This opportunity may never come up again,'” she continued. “He said, ‘That would work for the role,’ and I said, ‘I think so.'”
Well, after Damien admits that Margot’s character kissing Brad’s character would have been a great scene, he actually instructs her to “do it again” – Margot describes the kiss as “very good”, very nice to hear a little.
“He was like, ‘No, do it again. This really worked,'” she says. “I was like, ‘Oh, that’s great.'”
Margot previously worked with Brad on the 2015 drama comedy big shortand more recently, in Quentin Tarantino’s blockbuster Once upon a time in Hollywood.
The pair share a longstanding friendship — Brad even delivered a slightly awkward acceptance speech at the 2020 Baftas, with Margot’s help.
As you may recall, Brad was ready to joke that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were stepping back from the royal family in order to spend more time in Canada.
But when he suddenly couldn’t make it to the ceremony, he asked Margot to speak on his behalf the night before the big event.
Margot read Brad’s speech aloud from a piece of paper, “He said he was going to name this [award] Harry, because he’s really excited to bring it back to America! Interestingly, Prince Harry’s brother and sister-in-law, who sat in the front row of the audience, laughed at the quip, along with the rest of the crowd.
“The other night, he said, ‘Can you help me with my presentation? I can’t be there,'” she said. “I was so intimidated by his speech that I didn’t even think about getting one for myself.”
“I prepared two [awards]’” she continued. “For the two films in my category, it wasn’t until I was on my way there that I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I hope I don’t win because I don’t have anything to say. ‘”
