Iga Swiatek makes honest admission regarding shock loss to Aryna Sabalenka

Iga Swiatek admitted that Aryna Sabalenka played better in her WTA finals and deservedly beat the Belarusian. Swiatek, the top player in the world, exited the WTA finals with a 6-2 2-6 6-1 loss to Sabalenka in the semifinals.

“Aryna just played better, you could see it. In the second set I kind of wanted to overwhelm her, but in the third I didn’t feel like my type of game. I feel like I was playing too dangerous. And in the third she used her chances for sure and served really well” Swiatek told WTA Insider.

In 2022, Swiatek played lots of matches and also used many successful ones. This year, Swiatek made nine finals – winning eight of them, including two Grand Slam titles.

There was also a period between February and July in which Swiatek won 37 matches in a row. “I’m not going to lie, I’ve been waiting for this moment. It was quite difficult to see the goal but I’m still fully motivated & ready for each match.

This time I am so intense & I am so proud that I could play so well until the end. I’m glad this happened,” Swiatek reflected.

Swiatek fell short of winning her first WTA finals title

After Ashleigh Barty announced her retirement from tennis, Swiatek quickly established herself as the new face of the women’s game.

At the beginning of April, Swiatek replaced Barty in the top position. Since then, there are no changes in the world of the 1st order. After winning two Grand Slams and achieving the Year-End No 1 ranking, Swiatek hoped to cap off her amazing season by winning her first WTA finals title.

Swiatek made it past the group stage quite easily but suffered a surprising defeat in Sabalenka. Swiatek will now have to wait for at least one more season to win her first WTA finals title.
