Global Undergraduate Exchange Program 2023/24 – U.S. Embassy in Serbia

The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) provides a diverse group of emerging student leaders with a scholarship for one semester of non-degree academic study at an assigned US college or university. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and aims to attract participants from underrepresented backgrounds who have not had other opportunities to study in the United States. Successful applicants can expect an in-depth introduction to US society, culture and academic institutions, as well as the opportunity to improve their professional skills. Participants will be placed at a US university for the Fall 2023 semester (August-December 2023) or Spring 2024 semester (January-May 2024). The scholarship covers international travel, tuition, room and board, medical insurance, required books, and a small monthly stipend. All participants will be enrolled in full-time, non-degree, undergraduate coursework selected from their host institution’s existing curriculum. Students must enroll in at least two courses in their major and at least one course in an area of ​​U.S. studies such as U.S. history, literature, art, or government. Students are required to participate in at least twenty hours of community service during the program. Global UGRAD participants will live in campus housing with their American peers. The program will include a pre-departure orientation on post, a virtual arrival orientation and an in-person program symposium in Washington, DC.

Eligibility for the Global UGRAD Program:

  1. Applicants must be citizens of the country in which they are applying for the Global UGRAD Program and currently reside in that country.
  2. Applicants must study in the country where they are applying for the global UGRAD program.
  3. Applicants must be enrolled as full-time undergraduate students in good standing at any accredited university. At the end of the Global UGRAD program, participants are required to stay at their home university for at least one semester or equivalent.
  4. Applicants must demonstrate leadership potential through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities.
  5. Applicants must have solid knowledge of the English language, both written and spoken.
  6. Preference will be given to those with little or NO experience in the US or outside of their home country.
  7. Applicants must return directly to their home country after completing the program.
  8. Applicants must be over 18 years of age.

Individuals under the following conditions are not eligible to participate in the Global UGRAD Program:

  1. US citizens and permanent residents of the United States;
  2. Individuals currently studying, living or working outside their home country;
  3. Local employees of US missions abroad who work for the US Department of State and/or the US Agency for International Development (USAID); employees are not entitled even one year after the termination of the employment relationship;
  4. immediate family members (ie, spouses and children) of US State Department and USAID employees; family members are also not entitled to receive one year after termination of employment.
