Feeding America and Google.org Partner to Deliver 50 Million Meals

People across America are turning to their local food banks and Google searches to find resources and give back this holiday season

CHICAGO and MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA., November 10, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Google.org cooperates with Feeding America®’s nationwide network of food banks and pantries to help provide 50 million meals* and support technological advances through 10 million US dollars in financing.

Currently 34 million people United States, including 9 million children, face food insecurity. Of the food banks in the Feeding America network, 90% report increased or prolonged need in the past month. Food banks themselves are facing increasing headwinds as food donations drop and the costs of freight, food purchases and other aspects of operations increase. Google has seen this need reflected at the national level Google search trends. Every November, Google sees spike in search of food aid, but more than ever before Americans are searching around “food” and “prices” In 2022, the number of searches increased by 45% since last year. On the other hand, Americans are also searching “how to give back“more than ever with search”where to donate food near meincreased by 850% in the last five years.

Google.org’s support will help Feeding America and local food banks develop technology solutions that facilitate greater community access and impact. This kind of work—streamlining inventory management, tracking how much nutritious food is distributed—often backfires, though it can be critical to ensuring the right food goes to the right home at the right time.

Food banks also use systems to manage volunteers, neighborhood registrations and assistance. with SNAP applications and more,” said Merian Burdock, Feeding America’s Chief Information Officer. “All of this helps to end meal insecurity and ensure that more of our neighbors facing hunger have access to the meals they need to thrive. Feeding America will focus on improving their national performance MealConnect platform, an online platform and mobile application that connects community members with surplus food — from large retailers and farmers to small family restaurants — with local food banks seeking donations. Google.org’s support will enable the network’s food banks to equally meet the growing need for nutritious food while reducing friction in the supply chain and improving the experience of the people served.

Guided by Feeding America data and Google search trends, Google.org enables Feeding America to provide financial support to 32 local food banks serving more than 6.8 million people facing hunger.

Google.org also donates 10 million dollars donated in Search ads to local food banks and pantries across the US to connect them with people looking for resources or ways to give back.

Today’s announcement builds on Feeding America’s call with partners to halve food insecurity overall and by race and location by 2030.
