Ex-NWSL coach slams league as ‘woke’ after being banned for life

Former North Carolina coach Paul Lee, who was banned from the National League on Monday after multiple investigations into alleged sexual harassment and indecency, called the league “political” and “woke.”

Leo was among four coaches who received a permanent suspension from the league in an announcement released Monday.

Leo says he’s “going through a lot of things” and, despite his permanent expulsion from the league, never wants to return.

“We have a lot of plans before we fight a lot,” Riley told WRAL News on Tuesday. “Absolutely never had the intention of coaching in the NWSL again. Politician, woke, destroying the culture of the league, everyone says.”

It has not yet been determined what Leo fought.

The Joint Investigative Team for the NWSL found that the fault was “largely systemic in nature” and “recommended a number of prospective and structural reforms to improve official and friendly practices”.

As a result, NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman announced four permanent bans as well as suspensions for coaches Craig Harrington and Alyse LaHue and much more.

“The league will continue to prioritize and develop strategies, policies and procedures that put the safety and well-being of our players first,” Berman said in a statement. “These actions are fundamental to the future of our federation, especially as we build a league, that the ability of our players is strengthened to succeed and be successful and participate. As part of our responsibility to account and deter, the league has decided this further. Corrective action with respect to certain organizations and individuals , which are known in the Research Article Report, is appropriate and necessary.

In the case of Leo, a previous report was released by US Department of Defense official Sally Yates in October that found sexual harassment and misconduct that went back to 2015 during his coaching career in Portland, Oregon.

Both reports from Yates and the Joint Investigative Team stated that NC Mind did not know the full extent of Riely’s previous activities before hiring him in 2017.

Two former Portland Thorns players called him a “predator” per WRAL News, while another player called it a “culture of fear.”

Souls were also fined $100,000 and must hire a separate staff from the men’s tea, which is under the same ownership group.

“We stand firm with the league, keeping the NWSL Players Association and member clubs safe and well-being as our highest priority,” the organization said in a statement on Monday.

Five of the 10 head coaches in the NWSL last season were either fired or stepped down amid accusations of misconduct. Commissioner Lisa Baird also went down, making Berman’s trip.
